Board of Trustees

Summit Montessori School is a non-profit institution governed by a Board of Trustees. Trustees deeply believe in Summit’s mission and dedicate their effort and resources to serve its community Our Board is composed of current and past parents as well as individuals from the larger Boston-area community who bring expertise in independent schools, finance, development, facility management, and other professional fields.

Board Committees

The Board of Trustees leads several working committees to support the school. Committees include:

      • Development Committee: responsible for supporting the school’s operating budget through annual and capital fundraising.
      • Finance Committee: responsible for budgetary oversight and supporting analysis of the school’s financial health
      • Building & Grounds Committee: responsible for overseeing the school’s physical facilities and grounds, including maintenance and capital improvements
      • Governance Committee: responsible for ensuring best practices governance within the Board of Trustees

    In addition, the Board works closely with members of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee, who is responsible for steering the school’s vision for DEI and recommending best practices.

Matt Grasse, Chair

Matt Grasse is a current parent of two Upper Elementary students. He has been a Trustee since July 2020.

Elbert Hardeman, Vice Chair

Elbert Hardeman has been a Trustee since July 2021. He is the proud parent of Sophia (UL) and Noura (LE). They reside in Southborough, MA with his wife Nicole.

Elbert is Principal Cybersecurity Advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Elbert has had a 15 year career at the Federal Reserve working for both the Boston Fed. as well as the Richmond Fed. Prior to his current role, Elbert served as an Assistant Vice President of Information Technology and Resilience for the T2C program. Prior to that role, he served as the Deputy Information Security Officer (ISO) in the Federal Reserve National IT Information Security Office.

Prior to joining the Federal Reserve, Elbert worked as an IT consultant with Deloitte in New York City. Elbert also served as a Perce Corp Volunteer in Morocco, where he met Nicole who was also a volunteer. Elbert currently serves on the board of the Boston Debate League, an after-school debate program in Boston.

Elbert has earned Bachelor’s Degree in Business – Management Information Systems from California Polytechnic State University, a Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) and a Masters in Cybersecurity from Boston College. He is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), an Assistant Professor at Boston College and is a proud Eagle Scout.

James Lennon, Secretary

James Lennon is the current parent of an Upper Elementary student and an alum. He has been a Trustee since 2022.

Eric Falcone, Treasurer

Eric Falcone is a Summit Alum himself, graduating from our sixth grade in 1999. He has been a Trustee since July 2020.

John Bower

John Bower is a current parent of two students in our Elementary program. He has been a Trustee since July 2020.

Jeffrey Esper

Trustee since July 2018

Jeff is an auditor with the firm Liscombe and Parrella in Medway, Massachusetts specializing in Not for Profit organizations.  Prior to that Jeff held various management roles in the Finance Organization during his 20 years at EMC, then Dell Technologies.  Jeff began his career in finance with one of the big 6 public accounting firms.  Jeff has a BA in History from St. Anselm College and a Masters of Science in Accounting from Bentley University and has been a licensed CPA for the past 25 years.  Jeff lives in Hopkinton, with his wife Susan and his 2 daughters. Jeff serves as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee.

Andy Greenlaw

Andy Greenlaw is the current parent of an Upper Elementary student. He has been a Trustee since 2023.

Robin Jenkins

Robin Jenkins was elected to serve on the Summit Board of Trustees in 2021. She has been a member of the Summit community, since her daughter was enrolled in the Beginners program in 2013.  Robin also is an active member of Summit’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion Community, assisting each year with the celebration of Black History Month.  She is an audio engineer for WGBH Educational Foundation, teacher for The Berklee College of Music, musician and composer.  On occasion Robin provides audio/visual assistance with video documentation of Summit events and has a special interest in the maintenance and expansion of Summit’s building and grounds in addition to DEI initiatives.

David Keller

David Keller is the current parent of a student in the Children’s House program. He has been a Trustee since 2023.

Jessica Milan

Trustee since July 2018

Jessica is a software professional with over 14 years of experience managing technology projects in ecommerce, marketing, manufacturing, and telco. Jessica has held leadership roles at Yottaa, CashStar, Adobe, aPriori, and Amazon. Jessica earned a B.A. in Computer Science from Wellesley College. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts and has one son attending Summit. Jessica serves on the Buildings & Grounds Committee and as Chair of the Development Committee.

Summer Shaud

Trustee since July 2019

In addition to her involvement at Summit, Summer is an active volunteer in several other community organizations, including the Framingham Adult ESL program, Metrowest Immigrant Solidarity Network, and the Framingham Democratic Committee. Summer also brings to the board her experience working at a varied range of small non-profit institutions, including six years working as an Associate Pastor in a local United Church of Christ congregation. She holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School, and lives in Framingham with her husband Dan and their two children, both of whom attend Summit. Summer serves on the Development Committee.

Alex Stephen

Trustee since July 2019

Alex lives his passion by helping people transform their lives. He guides and empowers them to reach their goals and fulfill their life’s purpose, through Business/Life Coaching, Motivational Speaking and his TV Show “Live Your Passion”. He graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA). A Certified Public Accountant (CPA), he built a 25-year career in business finance where he held titles such as Vice President/Director in Corporate lending. He has worked in public and private companies such as Deloitte & Touche and BankBoston.

He has one granddaughter that is a Summit alum. Alex serves on the Development Committee.

Matthew Tomaszewski

Matthew Tomaszewski is the current parent of two Summit students – one in the Children’s House program and one in Lower Elementary. He has been a Trustee since 2022.

Martha Torrence, Head of School, Ex-officio Trustee

Martha has over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in Montessori education, including serving as Principal of the Xavier University Montessori Lab School and founding/administering Our Children’s Center in State College, PA. She was most recently the Director of Toddler and Primary Programs at Cambridge Montessori School in Cambridge, MA. Ms. Torrence served on the American Montessori Society Board of Directors for 11 years, serving as Teachers’ Section Chair, on the Executive Committee, and as Board President. Martha is a sought-after teacher trainer and speaker, having presented trainings and conference sessions in 22 states and 5 countries. She has written award-winning articles on her research topic, play. Martha currently serves as Board Vice President for the Montessori Schools of MA.
