Consider Stamp Collecting
Postage stamps are miniature pieces of art and a history lesson all in one. Children are keen observers and once they are introduced to the art of stamp collecting they are enthralled. We are offering an explorations class for children in Kindergarten through Grade 6 to learn about stamp collecting, to start their collection, do some fun geography and craft projects with stamps, and take a field trip to The Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History in Weston.
According to the American Philatelic Society there are estimated to be more than 5 million stamp collectors (known as philatelists) in the United States. While there are many famous collectors such as President Franklin Roosevelt, Beatle John Lennon and author James Michener, most are people who enjoy the hunt for new stamps. Stamp collecting is not an expensive hobby as stamps are readily available. Learning about stamps and how to organize a collection is fun. Each stamp is a miniature work of art, and how you care for them and display them is a creative endeavor. New stamps are constantly being issued and collectors sometimes enjoy collecting stamps of particular subjects like famous people or birds. Join Miss Siobhan to start your own collection, perhaps the start of a life-long hobby.
