Special Programs at Summit
The Spanish Program
La oficina del Se??or Eyster?????, ?????El Ba??o????? are among the signs that adorn the doorways throughout Summit's mansion, all part of our approach to learning Spanish. Our Spanish program continues to expand; students begin studying Spanish language and culture in Kindergarten and continue through Grade Six. Classes combine a variety of lessons, as well as activities, such as games, skits, songs, poems, and projects for all students. The oral approach, emphasizing speaking and listening, is complemented by the written word from the very beginning. In Grades Four through Six, writing and grammar are added to the conversation elements of the curriculum. The entire school shares in the Spanish Phrase of the month which is displayed and spoken throughout the school.
The Art Program
The Music Program
The sound of children singing and playing instruments resounds throughout the school. Our music program serves all levels. The community is treated to performance throughout the year.
The Children's House music classes are activity and
performance based using folk and traditional songs and rhymes to teach melodic expressiveness and the natural flow of language. Props and
movement activities are included in most lessons. Our young students participate in
pitch exploration and movement exploration. Within the class setting they perform and
improvise with the voice and simple instruments.
The Elementary classes are based in the National Standards for Music Education. Students participate in vocal exercises and learn songs to strengthen and explore their singing voice. They also learn basic music literacy (notes, time signatures, pitch) through hands-on movement, performance based activities and music composition activities.
All levels explore the history of music and composer's lives. These tie in with the yearly theme of the social studies curriculum. African, European and American music are examples.

After*School has never been so fun and enriching. From animation to games from around the world, Summit teachers are offering a new line-up of experientially based classes each season.
