Last week in the classrooms:

Friday, Jay Pasco-Anderson, Miss Jean's brother, was here to share his on-going nautical adventure with the students of Lower El.

Jay has been on an extended sailing trip with his high school daughter as part of the crew.  They sailed to St. John in the US Virgin Islands and will be returning to spend several weeks sailing around the Carribbean Islands.  He spoke to Lower El about nautical maps, how the trip, including the safety of the crew, was planned and what supplies were needed for that long a trip.  He shared a slideshow of the trip so far with the students and they were fascinated and full of questions.

On Thursday afternoon, the Lower El class was invited upstairs to hear a presentation by Callie and Maia about the conflict between the Hutus and the Tutsi people. After giving an overview of the histories of both groups, and showing the locations of Rwanda and Burundi on a map of Africa, they tried to explain how this centuries-old struggle developed and what the impact for both nations is now.

The Kindergarten students had a "mini" author celebration and read their newly finished stories to their classmates in the Childrens Houses. Here is Ian reading his story.

Third Year students have completed their individual visits to the Upper El.  They arrived on their day with work to do, sampled some of the Upper El materials, and joined us for a "family style" lunch.  Thank you to the UE hosts that offered to buddy-up with each visitor. It was really fun to be able to share what we are doing with the Third Years and to see what they are doing in their own work.

Monday Play Group

This is an on-going playgroup for all Moms and Toddlers - not just current Summit families.   If you know any Moms and Toddlers who would like to join the fun, please encourage them to come - Mondays from 9:30 to 11 in the Marino Room (or on the playground during good weather).

Finally

Today SMPA Co-Chair, Sue Savage, was here for her on-line auction Creative Movement Class for Preschoolers, the children were moving for an hour and a half including time for dress-up in dance costumes and they seemed to be having such fun. Those of us watching certainly were. Miss Sue, a very experienced dance instructor, was ably assisted by Callie and Amanda who seemed to be enjoying their time with Summit's younger students.  Here they are dancing to "Shakey Eggs".
