Monday Update - October 17
At 8:30 am this Wednesday the nine students of Upper Elementary will head off to Natures's Classroom at Point Judith Pond, Wakefield, RI. - right on the ocean! Upon arrival there will be a "meet and greet" activity. Two other schools, Trinity Catholic and a small school from Sharon will have already arrived. Summit's students will be in their own cabins and will spend the afternoons together in activities and classes. Mornings will be an opportunity for the students to participate with students from the other schools in field groups. They will be hiking, participating in challenges, skein netting, crabbing and clamming. Evenings will be for fun planned activities. The students will be back in time for dismissal on Friday - full of stories and hopefully with lots of pictures to share.
Saturday, October 22, from 1 to 3 pm is the reception for the Summit Art Exhibit at Amazing Things, 160 Hollis Street, Framingham. Students in Grades K-6 will sing at 2 pm. We ask that students arrive and be ready by 1:40 pm so that they will feel relaxed and ready to sing. Casual attire appropriate for a public appearance at the gallery is encouraged.
Sunday, October 23, at 2 pm Ed the Wizard will be at Summit for an Admissions Event. This free performance entitled "Reading is Magic" is not only a great way to introduce potential students and families to Summit, but it is also a fitting kick-off to the Annual Book Fair which will take place October 25-27, with the Family Night on October 27. We invite our current families to join us as well for this special performance on October 23, and by all means bring friends and families who might like to learn about Summit Montessori.
Mystery History Day takes place this year on October 31. Not only will the Upper and Lower Elementary students be trying to guess who their classmates are dressed as, but they will also walk down to Framingham Green to see how well the residents there do at guessing their historic figures. This is the first in what we hope will be a year-long collaboration with Framingham Green as the students of Summit and the senior citizen residents of Framingham Green get to know each other a little.
SMPA (Summit Montessori Parents’ Association) thanks all the Summit mothers, grandmothers, friends and vendors who joined us at Mom’s Night Out. A fun night was had by all! There was wonderful company and conversation, goodies galore and great shopping - all to benefit Summit.
Please join us this coming Friday, October 21. at 8:30 am for our next full SMPA meeting. Not only will we be discussing the upcoming events planned by SMPA, such as the book fair, Dad’s night out and family night at Pizzeria Unos, but we will also be trying something new and exciting called the parent to parent network. This meeting’s topics will include best toys for the holidays, best family weekend getaways and school transportation. Please come with information to share or with questions that will help promote lively discussion. Feel free to bring a great toy or electronic to display and / or contact information for outstanding family getaways. Please come and enjoy breakfast and mingle with fellow Summit parents. See you there!
Great seats, good company and lots of popcorn sharing made for a fun evening even though the Revolution did not earn the win. The kids particularly enjoyed seeing Summit Montessori School projected on the Gillette Stadium big screen.
Nurse Sue will be busy with assessments of children in PK4-Grade 6 over the next few weeks. She will be weighing and measuring children as well as checking hearing and vision in accordance with Massachusetts requirements for schools. She will contact parents if a student has difficulty with the hearing or vision test. Also, if you have a child in Grade 1 or Grade 4, please watch your email for a message about Body Mass Index (BMI) screening information. The purpose of the BMI screening program is to provide you with information about your child’s weight status and ideas for living a healthy life.
In addition, Nurse Sue will be presenting a lesson about germs to each preschool class. The lesson will review how to reduce the spread of germs through good hand washing technique and careful use of tissues. Each class presentation will occur during circle time next week.
Miss Tammy kindly shared some photos of the Kindergarten students in class last Wednesday. The Kindergartners were working on counting from 1-15. To practice learning the numbers, they worked in pairs and counted the fingers on plastic hands.
Lower Elementary introduced their class website last week in an email home to parents. Upper El has also notified parents about their class website. We invite you all to take a look at these great new resources by clicking on the words class website.. The password is summit in both cases.
Welcome to Tony Hollis, our new Facilities Manager who joined the Summit staff recently. We wish him well in his new position.
Tilia Jacobs showed me this picture today of Nate and Elwyn at Saturday's Boston Book Festival - I asked her if I could share it with you. The Festival sounded like great fun as well, a good one to remember for next year.
The 2011/2012 Parent Student Directory and Handbook will be going to the printer early this week after some final edits. As soon as it returns from the printer we'll send it home with the students.
