Monday Update - November 28

It was a pleasure to welcome everyone back after the long holiday break. At Monday Morning Meeting we heard about some of the wonderful celebrations our families shared (and some of the delicious food they enjoyed).

If you didn't have a chance to read our blog last Tuesday, I invite you to do so for a look at the Thanksgiving celebrations last week here at Summit.

We returned to the sight of the Christmas cactus outside Mr. E's office in bloom.  This lovely plant was given to us by Miss Stefanie's parents last year, and it bloomed beautifully.  This year it has bloomed again and we are enjoying the lovely pink and white blossoms.

Today was a special day for our Third Grade students - they received their dictionaries from Charles River Rotary Club.  Mr. Peter Barnes, Club President, was here to present the books.  He told the students a little about Rotary Clubs and the good work that they do.  He presented each of the students with a copy of the dictionary the Club had chosen for them.  The students were delighted and found not only definitions, but a host of other useful information as well.  We join the students in thanking the Charles River Rotary Club for this valuable gift.

It is Cyber-Monday, the busiest online shopping day of the holiday season!  Lucky for you, fabulous holiday gifts are just a click away at Summit's online auction.  Items include gift cards to your favorite stores and restaurants, toys and electronics, trips, event tickets and more!  Just go to www.biddingforgood.com/summit/fall2011.  Your purchase of an auction item benefits the students of Summit.  Be sure to check back daily as new items are frequently being added!!

Don't forget that teacher time opens on the auction site tomorrow, Tuesday November 29 at 10am!  Some of these precious trips and times with teachers and friends are first come, first serve, so be sure to check early! Your student is bringing home a "Look Book - Part 2" today that lists the many teacher time items.

The Summmit Fund Snippet

"They say money can't buy you happiness, but new research suggests that it can, if you spend it on someone else," began an article in The Boston Globe a short time ago.  "The study fits neatly with a growing body of research that finds that helping others is the best way to help yourself, that people who give more are more socially connected and happier," the Globe continued in an article discussing the roots of human happiness.

Similar to the recent Globe article, Dr. Alan Manevitz, a clinical psychiatrist at NY Presbyterian Hospital, wrote in a recent edition of Science, that a person's happiness is directly related to giving.  In it he states, "Reaching out and doing things for others allows you to create a kind of commuity.  It [happiness] is all about social networks and community ties and having a sense of doing something you feel is worthwhile.  Money is just one resource to be used to that end."

Giving to Summit makes a tremendous difference in the lives of children both now and in the future; it has a substantial and measurable effect on the School; and it is rewarding in and of itself.

Looking ahead to December 16, we wanted to let our Children's House Parents know that while it will be a normal drop-off day, it will be a short day.  The students of Children's House I will sing at 8:30 and then be dismissed to their parents.  The children of Children's House II and III will sing at 9 am and then be dismissed.
